The majority of national football leagues take a break for the winter holidays. Not the English Premier League, though – they have matches scheduled across the last week of the year. Among them, the Boxing Day matches, played on the second day of Christmas, December 26. While this year there have been several games postponed, there were still more than enough for Betway Naija to cover. Among them, the most exciting ones were the match played by Manchester City against Leicester where 9 goals were scored (Man City won 6-3), and the one played by Arsenal against Norwich City where the gunner scored five against their opponents’ zero. But Boxing Day matches routinely produce similar scores – here are some of the most exciting ones from the past.
Burnley v Everton, Tottenham v Bournemouth, December 26, 2018
Burnley and Everton met on December 26, 2018. Everton was a respectable 8th in the Premier League table at the time, while Burnley was far behind, just two places shy of last. Unfortunately, the Boxing Day match they played in 2018 didn’t bring the Clarets even a bit closer to a better position: they lost 5-1 to Everton. This being said, the match was pretty balanced, with a similar number of attempts and passes on both sides. Tottenham’s match v Bournemouth was, in turn, one-sided. Kane, Ericsen, and Moura all scored once, and Son Heung-min, one of the very few South Korean footballers in the Premier League, scored twice in the process. The Spurs ultimately beat Bournemouth 5-0 on Boxing Day.
Tottenham v Southampton, Bournemouth v West Ham, December 26, 2017
Tottenham’s match against Southampton was a resounding victory – and a great gift for those in love with quality football. A total of seven goals were scored during the match, with Spurs star Harry Kane scoring a hat-trick. Southampton did their best, putting the ball into the Spurs’ goal twice. But the most exciting match of the day was certainly the one played by Bournemouth against West Ham United on the same day. While Bournemouth dominated the turf and had more than twice as many attempts as their opponents, West Ham converted a higher proportion of their attempts to goals. The match ultimately ended in a 3-3 draw.
Manchester United v Newcastle United, December 26, 2012
To date, one of the most spectacular Boxing Day matches was the one played by Manchester United against Newcastle United on December 26, 2012. The match was dominated by the Red Devils but it was filled with dramatic turns, with Newcastle in the lead at halftime, and once again taking the lead in the second half before United’s equalizer just minutes later. The match ended in a dramatic way, too, with Chicharito’s winning goal scored in the 90th minute, turning this into one of the most exciting and spectacular Boxing Day matches ever played.
